This is an exciting opportunity in Seymour, Indiana for a Senior Machining Engineer.This Senior Machining Engineering role will support 95L Hedge Hog block machining working out of the Seymour Machining Center (SMC).

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Plans, designs, purchases, and implements machining processes and equipment in an industrial plant.

  • Determines parts and tools needed in order to achieve manufacturing goals such as setup reduction and changeovers according to product specification; works with engineering to identify problems with product and performance and recommends solutions or enhancements.

  • Designs, develops, implements, and analyzes technical products and systems.

  • Performs equipment engineering design evaluations and documents results; recommends alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures.

  • Coaches and mentors less experienced Machining Engineers.

  • Work to improve equipment availability and capability by utilizing continuous improvement tools and working cross functionally.

Experience:

  • Intermediate level of relevant work experience required.

  • May be required to supervise Manufacturing (Machining) Engineers, ATA's, Interns/Co-ops, School to Work students, while having direct machining support responsibilities.

  • Have demonstrated leadership skills in a machining organization while experience managing exempt personnel is preferred.

  • Have strong communication skills to support shift to shift hand-off and continuity across machining centers.

  • Ability to support off-shift and weekend technical issues is required.

  • Must be a self-starter, capable of leading and resolving production equipment or process issues, capable of identifying and working projects as well as assigned tasks/projects on own motivation, and have a desire to learn and grow in the role.

  • Requires supporting machining operations as well as participating in design reviews, and troubleshooting events.

  • Ability to working in cross functional teams with Operations, Quality, HSE, and Materials to support plant initiatives, improvements, and goals is critical for success.

  • Experience with CAD modeling software, history of operation with CNC Equipment, programming, and troubleshooting equipment faults and failures is required.

  • Must have a strong understanding of Polar co-ordinate systems, basic manufacturing engineering processes, and metal removal processes.

  • Experience with complex large part machining using vertical and horizontal machining centers is preferred.

  • Experience with Siemens and Fanuc control systems is preferred.

  • Must have ability to write CNC programs from technical part drawings.

  • Must have working knowledge of Geometric Design & Tolerancing (GD&T).

Skills

Equipment / Capital Procurement - Understanding the requirements for purchasing tools and equipment according to Cummins Production Equipment Specifications. Capital purchases require the approval of a Request for Capital Appropriations (RFA) which includes justification of the project from a financial/ strategic standpoint and must be completed in a specific format defined by the documented procedure. Thorough understanding of the Cummins Production Equipment Specifications. Significant experience in purchasing tools and equipment. Has written significant Request for Capital Appropriations (over $100K).

Computer Numerically Controlled Programming - Fundamental understanding of Cartesian and Polar co-ordinate systems; basic manufacturing engineering processes; and metal removal processes. Is able to program in fundamental program languages. Able to define and create machine motion and functions through the CNC program formats. Able to produce a process and ultimately a part using CNC equipment.

Tool And Fixture Design - Understanding and application of work piece holding devices in conjunction with the metal removal processes being employed. Understands and can design locating conventions and clamping techniques for holding components in a metal cutting machine. Some trouble shooting capabilities.

Fundamentals Of Safety - Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and health compliance, including federal regulations for general industry. Detailed understanding of how the provisions of the local workplace health and safety legislation may be implemented, rights and responsibilities under the legislation, the appeals process, recordkeeping, and voluntary protection programs. Understanding of general industry standards and the requirements of the more frequently referenced standards. Also includes knowledge of basic safety concepts such as personal protective equipment, behavior based safety, confined space entry, etc. Has a thorough understanding of safety regulations. Develops and implements an effective safety system to ensure compliance.

Process Layout - The ability to develop process layouts which encompasses all equipment, tooling and material flows necessary to provide for an effective Product Assembly process. The process layout should be completed using AutoCAD and should be to scale, including all process steps while accounting for Safety, Quality, Ergonomics, Throughput, and Product cost. Completed a minimum of 5 process layouts in which they have been the process leader. All layouts were completed using a software package i.e. AutoCAD.

Fundamentals Of Manufacturing - Basic competence in the body of knowledge as defined by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers for a Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT). The body of knowledge includes the following areas: Mathematics, Applied Science, Process Design, Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Manufacturing Management, Manufacturing Economics, Quality Control, Computer Applications, and Automation. Certified Manufacturing Technologist (Society of Manufacturing Engineers), or local equivalent). 3 or more years of experience working as a Manufacturing Engineer.

Process Documentation - This skill involves being able to properly document a process. Process documentation defines the sequence in which to perform process steps, along with the specifications for the process that are important to follow to ensure a quality and consistent output is produced. Can write process documentation for a manufacturing process or an administrative process and seek out the important specifications needed to complete it.

Problem Solving and Quality Improvement - Problem Solving and Improvement approaches, including understanding of tools/process type and selection, plus Corrective and Preventive Action processes. Needs no guidance with regards to this skill and can apply it in a wide range of work situations. Able to train others in problem solving.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Masters or Bachelor of Science, or equivalent technical degree required.

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
